Next Step: Laneway Walkabout – Tuesday, June 10, 7:00 PM
We’d love for you to join us on a walk through the laneway. This is a chance to show us exactly where the problems are—broken pavement, dark corners, dumping zones—and help us figure out where improvements like murals, planters, lighting, and a road mirror might work.
Meeting Point: Corner of Drovers & Parliament
Thank you to everyone who attended our first community meeting about the Verner/Drovers Laneway revitalization. We appreciate your honest feedback and thoughtful questions. This laneway is an important pedestrian route, but it also faces serious challenges.
Here’s a quick summary of what we heard:
What’s working:
- It’s a valuable walking route for kids, neighbours, and day-to-day life.
What’s not working:
- The laneway is used for loitering, illegal dumping, and drug use
- Graffiti and broken fences are common
- Potholes and poor pavement are a safety concern
What the community wants:
- A cleaner, more welcoming laneway
- Pavement improvements (patching/grinding, where possible)
- Thoughtful greening (but not large plants that attract dumping)
- Murals and public art, although there is some concern that this attracts graffiti
- Better lighting and a road mirror for visibility
What the community does not want:
- Benches or seating
- Any design elements that encourage lingering or create hidden spaces
