Bikes on Church
From "Church Street Pedestrianization Pilot"
Go to the project
I would love for bikes to be allowed (slowly, within reason and nuance) on the pedestrianized church. I think cycling and cyclists are well aligned with the goals of the project, and space reclaimed from cars should include bikes.

There's a detour I've been using that is not too bad. Between Wellesley and Maitland there's a laneway beside 55 Wellesley E that bends and goes through, then between Maitland & Alexander there's Donna Shaw Ln. Would be nice if they were better-paved, but it's OK in a pinch.

Can people just walk their bikes for 2 blocks. It is for pedestrians. If you make a bike path where would you put it. Also it does not matter because some of the the e-scooters and e-bikes just ride right through.

It appears like the matter has been decided: there are new official signs that just went up saying "Please walk your e-bike or e-scooter."
I asked the guy who was putting them up if that meant you could ride a manual bike through the area. He confirmed that yes, that is the case, though people might still yell at you!
I've ridden slowly along that stretch, but between the number of people and the need to dismount at the intersections, I couldn't go very fast even if I wanted to.

I completely disagree. The purpose of this area is to sit enjoy and walk without fear of being run over. It is 2 blocks, healthy bicyclists can walk easily the 2 blocks with their bike.

I somewhat agree: with the construction on Wellesley east of Jarvis, it's a bit annoying getting around the area. Walking my bike through the pedestrianized zone is irritating, especially in the hot weather we've been having.
With that said, I'm not sure we can trust most cyclists to ride slowly, "within reason and nuance." I just imagine most cyclists whipping through the closure area, which really defeats the purpose of a chill pedestrian zone. Pedestrians feel they're safe to amble along, enjoying the informational signs and atmosphere, and next thing they know... cyclists are zipping by, almost clipping them!

Definitely agree! Ultimately if Church Street was pedestrianized properly it would have a bike lane with speed calming measures and pedestrian protection along with new landscaping, seating etc

@Christopher Ray THIS is great feedback. While I don't think cyclists (mostly delivery bikes, to be honest) can safely be allowed to access the area as it is, a designated cycling corridor could work in future years.
