Extend King Street Priority

From "Traffic Regulation Review"

Go to the project

The king street priority project has been an overwhelming success. The street has become much safer for pedestrians, and thus much more active. It has also become much safer for transit riders, and cyclists. The streetcars on king are much more reliable in the priority section, with fewer blocked intersections, and much less traffic to contend with.

As such, the city should consider extending the priority project all the way East from the current boundary at Jarvis street, all the way to one of the 2 following options.

  • The intersection with Queen street, on the west side of the Don Valley river.
  • Cherry street, where a good number of streetcars turn to the distillery loop.

Since the section of king here is only approximately 1.5km long, and there are sufficient alternative east/west corridors (richmond/adelaide, front st), the actual load of private vehicle traffic on king in this stretch is relatively minimal. Thus, converting it to be part of the project should have minimal effect on motor vehicles, but a significant impact on cyclists, pedestrians, streetcars and other transit vehicles.

This would require the Councillor to hold meaningful engagement with the Corktown community.

The BIA has been looking into this and lobbying for it. I think they would like the eastern end of the "transit corridor" to be Parliament Street as this is really where the Adelaide and Richmond one way streets begin and where the new Ontario Line station will be. The TTC tracks on King are supposed to be replaced in 2026, good to have decision on this before then, even if it cannot be fully implemented until the Ontario Line opens.
