FIX air conditioning in ST. LAWRENCE COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTRE

From "Post your proposal here for the consideration of Councillor Moise"

Go to the project

FIX air conditioning in ST. LAWRENCE COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTRE - - - approved maintenance budgets to do this work had been in a place for a decade and yet someone decided to spend that approved and budgeted money somewhere else - - - my proposal is to locate that person or persons and take that money BACK and just FIX THE PROBLEM in 2024 with no more dodging or excuses. [ and this time make *sure* some cool air can make it all the way down to the big weight room ] - - - regarding :

article in the TORONTO STAR :

‘We’re just being ignored’:

Temperatures soared to 40 C in a downtowndaycare this summer. A fix will take at leasttwo years, angering parents

"Repairs to air conditioning at the St. Lawrence community centre may not come until 2025, according to local councillor. Kelly Skjerven Staff Reporter August 15, 2023"

"Stacey Rodas is worried that unless the air conditioning is fixed permanently, the daycare at St. Lawrence Community Recreation Centre will close during heatwaves, leaving her without child care. For the second summer in a row, a city-run community centre that houses a daycare has been closed during soaring summer temperatures — with a permanent fix still two years away, frustrating the parents who have children enrolled at the location. The St. Lawrence Community Recreation Centre on The Esplanade, built more than 30 years ago, was closed for four days at the end of July this summer when temperatures inside reached over 40 C."

--- thank you.

@Stacey Rodas - it is just too bad this took SO LONG to even begin to deal with it - in spite of the fact that there was an EXISITING regular recurring maintenace budget that could have and should have been used to fix it YEARS AGO - i gave up waiting - i am at the Y on Berkeley now.

Thank you so much for moving this forward, Councillor. I did the Star story and the two radio shows in hopes for a fix because this center is SUCH a huge part of the community for residents of all ages. This is great news to hear everything is moving forward. I know it was not without its challenges, and there will be more that arise, but let’s take stock and really honour how much work everyone has put in to get this issue the attention it deserves.

what a waste of time and space...and washing your hands of it all was the last straw...very disappointing... https://www.flickr.com/photos/danphilips/53762815483/in/dateposted-family/

Where is this meeting (just posted today, Apr 29, 2024) to be held 6:30 to 8:30 on May 8th? Lost count of the number of times lack of AC in StL CRC was discussed at CRC Advisory Council meetings in past years. Dance Studio becomes a hot oven on warm days. Unacceptable for all fitness classes.

Not surprised at all, will believe it has been fixed when I feel the cool air of a working air conditioning system. Cynthia Roberts

@Cynthia Roberts - i know what you mean . . . PARKS AND FORESTRY [ who are responsible for this ] have had budgeted approved maintenance money for a decade for things like this, but *never* spent it on SLCRC ].

Worked there for years and I can't believe they are still procrastinating on figuring out how to get the school condo and centre together to fix this! Everybody says not my department 🙄

a) the joining of this platform is way too intrusive with their questions. b) The new CC at One Yonge St is only a partial site: no treadmill etc room (as site is too small they say?) so St L is necessary. 98 degrees as shown in a photo is too hot. This place should be fixed sooooooner than the plans in place. Outrageous.

And what about the second new one being developed at new condos down by the water (I forget the name) but it looks like they also will not have a treadmill room... and is only a partial site. Who should we write about these two space, i am kinda livid about it. Thanks.

If the summer of 2024 is like last summer 2023 the St Lawrence Community Centre will be unuseable. The problem with the A/C is not new and should have been dealt with years ago. The lack of action affects seniors and children during the summer. The CIty can find money for the crusade of changing Dundas Street, but come up empty when THE COMMUNITY CENTRE needs urgent repairs. Shame on you
