Elevate Indigenous History with Commemorative Plaques, i.e.

The idea proposes adding 3 historical plaques of indigenous significance in the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood to promote the history of the area. 

Heritage Toronto staff have reviewed this idea and estimate that the cost of 1 heritage plaque is approximately $10,000 including materials and labour. 3 historical plaques would make the total $30,000.

Original Description:

Goal:    To promote the visual identity of heritage and cultural assets of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood and St. Lawrence HCD and elevate those of Indigenous provenance

Approach:

·        Work with Heritage Toronto and the Indigenous community to identify three important dates, people, and events in the history of Indigenous peoples in this area.

·        Commemorate with plaques that tell the stories and how they have shaped the Toronto we know today.

Budget for 3 plaques @ $7,500 each       $2,500

Note:   Although three plaques are initially proposed, this is one idea which can be scoped in a range of cost brackets, with associated investments ranging from modest to significant. It is hoped that there will be ongoing dialogue with the Councillor’s office to qualify and shape this idea further as design and cost input is received from staff experts at the City, and prior to it being submitted for voting.
