Idea #4. Commemorative Shoreline Interpretation from Parliament to Yonge St.

Goal:    To promote the visual identity of heritage and cultural assets of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood and St. Lawrence HCD by extending an historical shoreline identification throughout the neighbourhood

Scope: This idea contains two key elements:

1.      install interpretive plaques (varying formats) at street crossing locations;

2.      mark (as completely as possible) two contiguous lines along the ground, representing the waterline and the top of the embankment              

Approach:          Commemorate the location of the 1841 (Young) shoreline through the St. Lawrence neighbourhood:

•       Establish ad hoc Committee of SLNA with partners from Heritage Toronto, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood BIA, SLNA Heritage Committee and Mississaugas of the Credit (via The Moccasin Identifier)

•       Create an multi-element interpretation plan for anchor streets (Yonge, Parliament), cross streets (including sidewalk, curb and/or roadway identification, as appropriate), open laneways (if any)

•       evaluate various identification methods, including anchor plaques, intermediate plaques, coloured pavers, the Moccasin Identifier icon, roadway painting – and appropiate locations for each

·        identify both water line and top of embankment

Elements:

•       anchor plaques at each end (2)

•       intermediate plaques on cross streets (10)

•       pavement, sidewalk, roadway markings

o  use of coloured pavers (where pavers are already installed)

o  use of moccasin identifier as appropriate

Budget:

•       anchor plaques: 2 @ $7,500        $15,000

•       intermediate plaques: 10 @ $2,500         $25,000

•       pavement markings:     $15,000

•       coloured pavers:             $10,000
