James Canning Gardens Off-Leash Dog Park

We propose that an off-leash dog enclosure be created on the portion of James Canning Park added with the acquisition of 14 Dundonald St. The current design of this annex integrates poorly with the rest of the park and provides little benefit to the neighbourhood. In fact, the under-utilization of this property has acted to attract encampments of drug addicts: a dramatic misuse of park space in the midst of high population density. Converting this area into a dog enclosure would provide a needed facility to the hundreds of nearby dog owners and provide a neighbourhood meeting place for old and new residents. With steady use, even non-dog owners will be attracted to other sections of James Canning Gardens. With proper planning this annex can contribute to making for a more liveable, safer, and healthier community.

Thank you for submitting this idea, Marie, I want to assure you that I have already scheduled a meeting with Parks Forestry and Recreation staff to discuss this proposal. Protected dog off-leash areas are very important for a community's access to recreation and pet wellbeing. I will continue to try to push forward with these priorities in mind. As conversations between my office and staff continue, I will keep the community updated with information.

I recently read a study that found that a major contribution to neighbourhood safety was the number of dogs and dog walkers. People have to walk their dogs several times a day so provide visibility and the opportunity for engagement. Dundonald St is a very challenged place. A dog park would be a real help to the community.

May we please have an update on our proposal from Councillor Chris Moise? We do not want a repeat of last year’s fiasco. This requires action as soon as possible.

Just today May 1, there is already a huge tent that has been erected in the area and the collected paraphernalia has started to accumulate (chairs,luggage etc). This project can't happen soon enough. We want our park back.
