Modify the Ontario Street Bicycle Lane

From "Post your proposal here for the consideration of Councillor Moise"

Go to the project

Modify the northbound bicycle lane on Ontario Street between Carlton Street and Aberdeen Street.

The small portion of the curb side northbound bicycle lane on the east side of Ontario Street has a blind spot at the corner of Ontario and Aberdeen Streets.

In an effort to maximize cyclist's safety and mitigate any city liability; push the car parking back to the curb and have the north bound cyclists use the centre of the road just as they do north of Aberdeen Street.

The appropriate signage and road markings would need to be completed as part of the modification.

Bike lanes on Ontario are creating uneccessary hazard and confusion. Futhermore, parking on Aberdeen should remain on the north side and parking should be increased to allow those of us with space, i.e. parking pads, to utilize them. Our area and our city need more accessible parking.

If I understand, Jan, I absolutely agree that the current set-up of cars and bikes is a dreadful hazard for all who walk AND bike here on Ontario, Aberdeen AND Winchester! We NEED it changed.

Implementation of this proposal will increase safety for both cyclists and pedestrians on that stretch of Ontario St.

I was part of the community group that met with city officials when the bike lane was proposed. My understanding is that the City has safety protocols that they applied when determining it was safer for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists for the bike lane to be where it is now. If they change their view so be it. I defer to the experts.

The lanes are unnecessary city infrastructure that clutters the public ROW. These are not Major Streets with traffic -- they can easily be shared with cyclists.

@Jordan Allison you'd think so, except that is often not the case. Also, the lanes in place from Carlton to Aberdeen are contraflow. To protect cyclists some sort of lane is needed to show that they are allowed to go north there. If they switch to just a painted contraflow lane then they need to move parking back to the other side of the street.

The bike lane in question is now impassable with all the snow. It needs to be plowed separately with the current setup, whereas the way it was before, simply plowing the street also allowed bikes to pass.

@Linda Beatty This is absolutely reasonable .... the right solution to this terrible mistake.

It's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

My wife and I believe that a perfectly effective parking system with good pedestrian accommodation has been replaced by blind vision - when parking takes place in the newly created spaces in the middle of Ontario Street and when the foliage increases in the summer - which is incredibly dangerous and has the potential to be an accident waiting to happen.

@Ian and Jennifer Robinson Absolutely correct! I am especially worried about my grandchildren crossing to get to the park, now that the corners are so hazardous!
