Parkette at King/Queen Triangle

From "2023 PB Cluster 6"

Go to the project

This idea suggests to turn the small green space at the intersection of King Street, Queen Street and River Street into an official parkette.

Parks, Forestry, and Recreation has reviewed this idea and estimate that the project will cost approximately $300,000 including materials and labour.

Original Description:

I propose turning the small green space at the intersections of King St, Queen St, and River St into an official park or parkette. I think the park should be named, and that graffiti on the bridge walls cleaned up; under the bridge could use a clean up, too. Currently this space is under-utilized and I think it has some potential to be more interesting. It could be nicer.

Note: This is one idea which can be scoped in a range of cost brackets, with associated investments ranging from large to very significant. It is hoped that there will be ongoing dialogue with the Councillor’s office to qualify and shape this idea further as design and cost input is received from staff experts at the City, and prior to it being submitted for voting.

The bridge walls provide the perfect opportunity for public street art. There will always be new graffiti here, whether legal or not. Designating this a legal graffiti space allows for quality artwork, community engagement and an additional amenity at no cost to the City. This would also tie this space to the culture and aesthetic of Underpass Park.

what about the Indigenous art already planned for this site? Is that still happening? "At the intersection of King, Queen and River Streets, artist team Amy Malbeuf and Jordan Bennett will work with designer Benjamin Matthews and IOTA Studios to assemble a sculptural tribute to the Don River and historical floods that affected the area in past eras. They will also remodel the site’s landscape. “ details, see https://www.waterfrontoronto.ca/news/Winning-designs-revealed-for-major-Indigenous-public-artworks
