Pedestrian crossing at Queen/Sackville

From "Post your proposal here for the consideration of Councillor Moise"

Go to the project

On July 18th, 2024 a 42–year old mother and neighbour was struck and killed by a car crossing at a pedestrian crosswalk at Queen and Sackville.

This petition is to demand the pedestrian crossing be converted to a traffic light as quickly as possible.

This crossing at Queen/Sackville is especially important given its proximity to St. Paul’s Catholic School on the south and adjacency to Nelson Mandela Public School just a block north.

Let’s please rally to support this petition and try to make sure a tragedy like this never happens again.

Councillor Moise, plese provide an update on whether this driver will be charged. Driving through a lit, flashing crosswalk should have very severe consequences. This type of behaviour needs a deterrent.

Dear Chris: I agree that the installation of a light standard at the intersection of Queen and Sackville should be expedited! I don't fully understand your comment, as follows: "...Clerks have advised that because the matter is delegated to community council it cannot be submitted to City Council." Might it be possible to re-classify this issue as one demanding City rather than Community Council? Regards, Leonard Swartz 416-845-5994

@Leonard Swartz — I support your suggestion because I just heard on the news that on July 25, City Council McKelvie is expected to pass a motion to rename a couple of downtown street routes "Taylor Swift Way". If this Councillor is allowed to put forth her motion, then Councillor Moise should also be allowed. This is a matter of community safety. What's wrong with simply giving Taylor a key to the city?

I've never been a fan of crosswalks. As a driver I find some people forget to stop, look to their left and right to make sure that it's clear to proceed. There should also be flashing light warnings that a crosswalk is coming up. Streetlights are a better option, but I hope we don't have to wait a year to get these lights installed especially since the crosswalk serves students, residents and clients of the Good Shepherd.

Thank you for prioritizing this. Too often I feel I’m taking my life into my hands crossing at this intersection
