Raised Sidewalk Crossing

From "Traffic Regulation Review - Fall 2023"

Go to the project

Currently, the intersection of Dundas Square and Victoria Street is a blind corner based on how close the building is to the edge of the sidewalk. Frequently people come out of the parking garage, looking in a single direction, and proceed around that corner without proper caution. This proposes a raised sidewalk crossing at this intersection. By causing vehicles to go up over a raised sidewalk, instead of pedestrians down to street level, we'll be achieving several benefits.

  • Vehicles will naturally slow down due to the sidewalk acting as an oversized speedbump.
  • There will be a visual indicator that this is an area where pedestrians are expected, so they should be aware of any coming out from behind the building.
  • Improved walkability for people using mobility aids such as walkers, canes, and wheel chairs.

The city already has guidelines for raised sidewalk crossings, i believe this intersection should be considered. https://www.toronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/8f22-ecs-specs-roaddg-raised-crosswalk-intersection-guideline-Jan2020.pdf

I'll add that it might also make sense to do the same at the west end of Dundas Place, given how many pedestrians are crossing that intersection when walking north/south on Yonge.
