Re-Open Sumach-Shuter Parkette

From "Post your proposal here for the consideration of Councillor Moise"

Go to the project

Sumach-Shuter Park is located in Trefann Court and is the only public park in our community. Revitalization planning began at least 6 years ago, with construction beginning in March 2024. By July 2024, the new playground equipment was installed. By May 2025 the light standards, fountain, off-leash area, seating, gardens and fencing were all installed. Finally, sod was laid and the last poured cement fully cured.

The park has been dormant since, with the temporary fencing and Do Not Enter signs preventing the Trefann Court community from getting access to their only public park.

Notice has been given that the park will have a ribbon-cutting opening on July 20.

The community wants it opened now instead of waiting for a photo op.

As our community’s only public park, with construction completion originally scheduled for October 2024 (then Nov 2024, then Dec 2024, then June 2025 and now July) it’s in the public interest to open the park today, not July 20.

Isn't this park a five-minute walk from the beautiful new Regent Park and the community centre, pool, etc...?

Yes, and? This park existed prior and serves the community south of Regent Park.

@Lisa Cahill 100%. This is Trefann Court's community park and it's been barricaded for a year and a half. Of course we've been using other parks in the mean time. And we've been very patient (the playground portion was literally complete a year ago). It became especially galling to have to walk past our clearly-completed-but-closed-off-park for no real reason other than, perhaps, a grand opening photo-op scheduled for July 20. The dirt said it was a sod issue, but the playground and the dog park can be accessed without walking on the sod (i.e. they could have just fenced off the sodded area instead of the whole park). HD - Not sure what you intended to achieve with your comment? You don't believe our community should be frustrated at not being able to access our park because there are other parks a 10 or 20 minute walk away?

You’re cute HD. Google maps says 8-9 minutes from Sumach Shuter Parkette to the Regent Park Dog Park but anyone who has a dog knows it can take longer. Anyway, what’s your point? We don’t deserve an open park? It’s open now and there are a lot of people enjoying it.

WOW Unbelievable — only 863 signatures reached the 51% mark treshold and that was all it took to rename the park in the downtown of City of Toronto,Canada WOW ........""With over 63 offline and over 800 online petition signatures, Sumach-Shuter Parkette will soon be renamed Louis March Park."

Councillor Chris Moise TOO LATE! We don’t want you in our park! Please hold your photo shoot and ribbon-cutting somewhere else on Sunday July 20th ! If you show up with cameras, journalists, and cutting tape in our park, we will protest and make sure they understand exactly why.

Okay this is wild to me, I am a dog owner, but also a parent, my daughter is now too old to care for parks, but I can not even begin to explain, how important it was to have a park where she can have friends visit and not be coped up inside. With our rentals being built so tiny, any kid friendly space is welcomed, when grandparents have to step in and help care for the kids, for cost effective reasons among others, it's the parks to take their grandkids to, that help ease the burden of the exhaustive energy kids can have :-) Nope, instead we have councillor who care more about how they look on camera, than the people they are overpaid, to serve. Just give us our park back, stop forcing people to wait. The people holding back re-opening, for this park which is fully complete, are people who do not understand the community or its needs. We have families, single parents households and seniors who would very much love to use this park for their children. I am selfishly excited for my dog to have her park back, but I can't help but feel for the kids, give them their park back, enough is enough!

Why do we — and especially the kids — have to wait just for a photo-op with Chris Moise and the mayor Chow on July 20? This is shameful. I pass by the park every day on Sumac St, it’s all done, only the fence needs to be removed. There is no more workers coming to the park, is empty all day. It’s a shame that we even have to ‘vote’ on this, in normal countries, it’s just called common sense !

Imagine this……you just finished your last day of school, you’re so excited for Summer!!! When you’re running home you find out the new park is open!!! What a dream that would be! Let these kids explore this new magical place and celebrate that School’s Out for Summer!!! Friday, June 27 would be a great day to open up the park for all to enjoy!!

The City told me they were waiting for the sod to take hold before opening the park. I see that they let the sod get brown in chunks before sending a guy in there with a backyard style sprinkler. At this rate, they'll have to paint the sod green for Moise to get his photo op. Meanwhile, the dog area has artificial sod and can be accessed from the street without entering the rest of the park. So - there's no need to block that part off, but they have it blocked off anyway. When Kristyn Wong Tam was our Councillor, she cared about what the community wanted for the park. I miss that.

EASY: take the fences down. Park is enjoyed. Put a ribbon up. Cut it. Politicians pat themselves on backs. Like I said: EASY
