PB2025 - Corktown Commons: Installing Benches Under Shades

This idea proposes to install 10 park benches along the canopied trees and/or undecided locations of Corktown Commons.

Parks and Recreation staff have reviewed this idea and estimate that the cost of procuring and installing 10 benches will be $10,000.

Proposed Features

Multipurpose Sports Court: Configurable space for:

3x3 basketball

Futsal (mini soccer)

Pickleball or badminton

Outdoor Fitness Zone: Calisthenics setup, pull-up bars, bodyweight training zone.

Mini Track / Warm-Up Area: Rubberized strip for sprint drills or kids’ activities.

Portable Event Area: Fold-out turf for yoga, Zumba, and summer classes.

Community Corner: Benches, shaded seating, hydration station.

Solar-Powered Lighting for evening activities.

As Corktown Commons (18 Acres) is the largest park in the area and a massive flood protection landform, it has significant infrastructure below the park that restricts the original proposal from being fully feasible. Notably, it is also within the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority jurisdiction, Waterfront Toronto jurisdiction and would require the Natural Protection Zone approval. Significant weight or drilling work suggested could potentially risk damage to the flood protection infrastructure below the park and the surrounding environment. As such, Parks and Recreation staff has approved the feasibility of additional benches/ seating areas within the park space to accommodate for this request.

It seems like the main point of this one was diluted. I’m confused as to why benches are the only thing that remains from the original submission (sports and fitness zone)
