Reducing the sidewalk bump out outside 80 Mill St

From "Post your proposal here for the consideration of Councillor Moise"

Go to the project

The wide sidewalk bump out in front of 80 Mill St impedes safe drop offs and pick ups for that condo’s residents and their guests. This is now especially problematic with the busy 504C replacement bus using Mill St, along with the 121 and 202 TTC routes. Mill St is a very heavy traffic street 12 months a year, including the very lengthy Distillery Winter Market.

Unlike 70 Mill St, 80 Mill has no safe drop off and pick up zone. Just west of 80 Mill is a 15 minute parking area that is often violated and rarely enforced. It does not serve 80 Mill St residents and guests.

Reducing the wide sidewalk bump out will allow for the addition of a safe pick up and drop off zone for residents of 80 Mill St and their guests.

Agreed that there's always delivery trucks parked up with two wheels on the pavement. However, rather than giving up more pedestrian space for vehicles and encouraging large trucks to idle in front of our front entrance - why don't we take the first (and maybe even second) 15-minute parking space directly to the west and allocate it as a delivery zone. No construction required, no trucks parked out front of our entrance, and only 10ft away from the originally-proposed location

@Kristopher Luey Although I agree if we look to the west that would interfere with the TTC stop If we proceed, as suggested, this will only create several more parking spaces for cars. The 15 minute zone to our east, which is never monitored by Parking Control anyway, could be extended to incorporate another car space with a additional signage Deliveries Only or at the least No Standing.

@Chris Horne yes agreed, also a good option!

@Chris Horne Hi Chris, As mentioned before, the petition gets some attention from city hall with the understanding they look at the need and make decisions based on what’s available. Would you be able to send a picture of the spot reference for attachment to help everyone see what this could be?

@Kristopher Luey that space as noted is used by vehicles with parking permits for the street. Walk over to 70 Mill and see what is there. No parking whatsoever is allowed in that space. It is for pick up and drop only. . This is exactly what we at 80 Mill need. Far too many residents, either young children or mobility issues are severely impacted by the current situation.. asking them to walk what you consider just a few steps? I’m a wheel chair, musing a walker or a cane? Or managing a baby stroller and groceries? That is an enormous inconvenience. Try to imamgine this.

We can all acknowledge that the architecture of the request might have some gaps, but that’s the beauty of the platform. This proposal isn’t a set in stone diagram for the end result, rather an opportunity to garner attention and represent our neighbourhood to our local representatives. They have the tools and capabilities to assess and address in the best way possible. We may not be the ones struggling with the lack of drop-off space because we use a personal car or don’t use the bus and wheel trans. Can we consider working together to represent the vulnerable members of our community?

This change will just provide more street parking spaces .which means the main objective The 15 minute signage to the west, is never enforced, what makes this change any different? Also, the signage outside 70 Mill Street is rarely enforced

@Chris Horne the space outside 70 Mill *is* regularly enforced, and has clear signage. Go take a look, next time you’re walking your dog.. The 15 minute space just west of us is never enforced and is already used by residents with valid parking permits. Perhaps think of your neighbours here — specifically the needs of residents here with mobility issues, who use mobility devices. Or parents with young children in strollers. WheelTrans, ambulances and emergency vehicles are impeded from direct street access. Seconds count. Not everyone feels comfortable expressing a need. If you want to discuss this further, please speak with me privately.

@Margaret Dougherty By removing the 'hump' with parking spaces will only see car parking there all the time. Most other time the space in front of 80 is vehicle free which allows for Uber/taxis to easily drop off passengers. I now have a mobility issue and it is reassuring to know usually the 'hump' space directly outside 80's steps is vehicle free. Pick up and drop off signage could easily and less expensively replace the 15 minute signed space to the west of us and extended.

I agree that the oversized sidewalk is unnecessary and unsafe here. It is also not uncommon to see vehicles with two tires pulled up onto the sidewalk in order to allowed other vehicles to pass - would be better to have a normal sized sidewalk.

And now they're going to block off the west sidewalk on Cherry from Mill to Front for a week. There's a 121 River/Esplanade bus that picks up at Front and Cherry (south side). Now people will have to factor in crossing the street at Mill, walk north on Cherry and then cross the street at Front. You'll have to add up to 5 minutes of walking just to get a buss we once could reach by going through the parking lot north of us.

I didn't really understand what you meant by "bump": I thought you were talking about a little hill that raised up from the sidewalk. I see you mean the wide area of the sidewalk that juts out into the street. I agree it's always seemed unnecessary to me.

@Deborah Mills please knock on my door if you need to further understand why this will help all of us.,
