Remembering the King Street Footbridge and Water Creeks

From "2023 PB Cluster 6"

Go to the project

Background History: The very first survey done in 1819 identified two footbridges along King Street East. The first footbridge, east of Parliament Street, was located between Sackville and Sumach Streets. It would have been short in length, but nonetheless this suggestion recognizes its existence.

During the Old Town era a number of creeks were known to exist and with this in mind this proposal is based on the theme of 'Water' which is a source of life, to indigenous people it links the spiritual and physical world, and in various cultures it symbolizes life, purity, renewal, and reconciliation. In Corktown, it would help link the east and west sides of King Street East that have been separated by the Richmond/Adelaide overpasses since the 1950s.

The goal is to replace existing 5X5 feet cement slabs, closest to King East curb, with Blue & Grey reflective bricks and scattered with fishes as this would have been a source of food for wildlife and Tkaronto First Nations peoples.
