Wandering Spirit Square

From "2025 PB Cluster 6"

Go to the project

Name the King/Queen Street Triangle 'Wandering Spirit Square' and dedicate it to Pauline Shirt and Vern Harper, founders of the Wandering Spirit Survival School, known to be the first alternative school for native children in Canada. In 1978, the school opened in the basement of Sackville Public School, later renamed Inglenook. In 2018-19, the school was renamed 'Kapapamahchakwew - Wandering Spirit School' and to this day provides Indigenous children the opportunity to learn about Anishinaabe cultural traditions. Reports indicate that by the start of the 20th Century this area was transformed into a 'public square' with a drinking fountain.
