Yonge-Church Corridor cycling improvements
From "Traffic Regulation Review - Fall 2023"

I'm living on Isabella St between Yonge & Church and finding that it can be perilous to access my street when cycling home. This block of Isabella is one-way eastbound, which means I must enter from Yonge St. I sometimes used to cut across the linear parks but those are closed for construction. Yonge/Isabella has no traffic light. Moreover, the nearest traffic lights are at westbound one-way streets (Charles, Gloucester). So when trying to access my street I am left with a variety of less ideal options:
- If I come from Church Street, I have to ride wrong-way, walk from the intersection, or ride on the sidewalk.
- If I'm coming from Bloor West, I have to turn south on Yonge and then make a very hostile left turn at Isabella without a light or crossing.
- If I'm coming from Wellesley West, the linear parks are blocked off so I am forced to turn north on Yonge and ride several hostile blocks. (Even when the linear parks were open, there is no curb cut at Dundonald).
- If I'm coming from Bay St, and I take an eastbound street (like St. Joseph or St. Mary), I reach Yonge without a light and have to make a perilous crossing. Or ride wrong-way on a westbound street (like Irwin or Charles) in order to be able to cross Yonge on a traffic light.
I think that first and foremost we need a traffic light or pedestrian crossing at Yonge/Isabella. But second, I think the city should strongly consider allowing cyclists to ride contra-flow on many of the one-way streets in the area. Isabella between Yonge and Jarvis would be a strong candidate. For better cycling connections Id' also suggest some contra-flows between Yonge and Bay - perhaps St. Joseph, St. Mary, or Irwin. The gist of it would be to avoid forcing cyclists on to that hostile stretch of Yonge and give them safe passage to the neighbourhood streets.
