BudgetTO 2023

The City Budget draft is launched every January, and many of the services budgeted for may not reflect the will of each resident. Councillor Moise wants to hear from Toronto Centre residents about what your thoughts are, what you support, and what you don’t.

There are three phases to the budget process, including:

Committee Review & Public Deputations
Approval Phase

The timelines of each phase can be found below. We want to hear from residents before the approval phase and to voice your opinions at the City.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for public deputations on January 17, 2023, and January 18, 2023, to speak to the Budget Committee. However, we recognize this is not always accessible or plausible for residents, so we have included a space for comments on our platform. You can leave your comments below during Phase 2 - Public Deputations after January 10.

January 14, 2023 - January 23, 2023

The public has an opportunity to speak to Budget Committee on Tuesday, January 17 and Wednesday, January 18, 2023. Members of the Budget Committee will divide themselves into groups to hear from residents across the city at the Etobicoke Civic Centre, North York Civic Centre, Scarborough Civic Centre, and Toronto City Hall.

Ashwin R3 years ago My partner and I use the TTC as our primary means of transport, including to go to work, visit friends, and do our shopping and grocery. We do not own a car and we do not support car centric infrastructure for various reasons, but primarily due to our demand for sustainable practices. With our work schedules, we end up working 60 hour weeks, and it so happens that we use transportations at non-peak times with two transfers, including from bus to subway. With long waiting times, and TTC's infamous reliability issues, any increase in wait time has multiplicative effect on total transportation times. I know Mayor Tory believes these increase in wait times is just the cost of reducing the city budget and deficit. But the TTC service changes has the potential of converting our 40 min travel time to 60 mins, assuming nothing breaks down which is a very optimistic outlook. This essentially means 20x5=100 minutes taken away from each week just travelling. That's 100 minutes we cannot be together as a family. Where does it end ? How much time are we expected to give to our professional lives just to expect a standard quality of life. The worst part of it all is that I am paying this 100 minutes of life at the cost of tax revenues that Mayor Tory would rather not have the ultra rich property owners at Rosedale and Forest Hill pay. I actually find the 10 cent increase in TTC fares reasonable but why do we not look at other potential revenue streams to fund critical services such as the TTC, which the vast majority of Torontonians will be served with. Finally, I just want to ask the TTC board, why they use the pre-pandemic service as the baseline ? Did they ever use the TTC pre-pandemic ? Peak times were crowded and nasty, and not at all the ideal we should be striving for. I would make the argument that current service levels are optimal if we were to account for passenger comfort. To the TTC board and the Mayor, I ask them to change their baselines and their mindsets, and fund a public transit program that Toronto deserves, not a crowded, infrequent, unreliable mess that they want it to be.
