Church Wellesley Village Neighbourhood Branded Street Signs
Project Overview
This project spearheaded by the Councillor’s Office in collaboration with the Church Wellesley Neighbourhood Association aims to pay tribute to the vibrant history of Toronto's Church Wellesley Village Neighbourhood. It sheds light on the challenges faced in the past, the victories achieved, and the progress that has been made over time.
Artistic Representation
The artwork for this project, skillfully crafted by resident Madison Matti Charlton, holds deep meaning. Each element of the flag represents something unique, emphasizing the inclusive and secure environment that defines Church Wellesley Village. From the Progressive Pride flag to the Intersex flag symbolizing non-binary identity wholeness, and the Two-Spirit flag reflecting a distinctive Native identity, every detail encapsulates the essence of the neighbourhood.
Placemaking Initiative
This initiative was born out of the need for distinct branding, as observed in other Toronto Centre neighbourhoods. The installation of Street Signs is a strategic move to enhance community identity, commemorate heritage, and foster civic pride within Church Wellesley Village.
Installation Details
The Street Signs, marking the boundaries from Yonge Street to Jarvis Street, and from Charles Street to Carlton Street, will be placed strategically across all streets and laneways outside the Church Wellesley Village and Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Areas. The anticipated cost of this project is approximately $12,000, financed through Section 37 funds, which have been allocated by City Council from the development at 601-613 Yonge Street.
Implementation Timeline
The fabrication of the signs will commence in November 2024 by the City of Toronto’s Signs and Markings Unit of Transportation Services. The installation process is expected to be completed by the end of March 2025, marking a significant milestone in the preservation and celebration of Church Wellesley Village's unique history and identity.
