Renaming of Sumach-Shuter Parkette to Louis March Park
At the request of local community members who took the initiative to propose the renaming and organize local support, Sumach-Shuter Parkette will soon be renamed to Louis March Park.
With over 11 online plus 63 offline petition signatures of local community members, as well as over 800 signatures from a wider online public petition, it is clear that the community is eager for this transformation.
The park, located at the intersection of Sumach Street and Shuter Street, has undergone a redesign and now holds a name that honours the roots of Regent Park.
Louis March was the founder of the Zero Gun Violence Movement, dedicated to ensuring that everyone lives in a safe, supportive and opportunity-rich environment, regardless of their background. His untimely passing on July 20, 2024, was a significant loss for the city. However, his vision for peace and justice continues to inspire efforts in the community. Renaming the park after him not only pays tribute to his life but also aligns with the values he championed.
The City Council motion to rename the park was approved on May 21, and City Parks staff are actively planning a celebration to mark the opening of the newly named Louis March Park. This event is set to take place before the end of 2025, providing the community with an opportunity to come together and celebrate this meaningful change in Regent Park.
