More Trees Coming to Ontario Street - Central Neighbourhood House

Overview

We're installing a Planter Expansion and planting 4 additional trees. This project was chosen by our community in 2024 through Participatory Budgeting.

Ontario Street between Gerrard Street and Dundas Street East is getting some much-needed green. Councillor Chris Moise and his office have been working to bring more trees to this stretch of the neighbourhood — an area that has noticeably fewer trees compared to surrounding streets.

The proposal centres on 349 Ontario Street, Toronto, Ontario: 4 new concrete planters would be created along the sidewalk in front of Central Neighbourhood House, each one designed to hold a newly planted tree. This kind of work involves cutting into the existing concrete sidewalk and pouring concrete to create new planters for tree plantings and additional plants to take root and grow.

More trees on this block means more shade for people walking by, cleaner air, and a more welcoming street for everyone who lives, works, and spends time in the area. It's a small change with a real impact on the day-to-day feel of the neighbourhood.

Funding

Transportation Services has estimated the total cost of this project at approximately $150,000, which covers both materials and labour. This funding would come from the City of Toronto through Transportation Services.

Councillor Moise's office has been pushing to make sure neighbourhoods like this one — where tree coverage has fallen behind — get the investment they deserve.

Timeline

This project is permitted by City of Toronto, and contractor bidding was completed in June of 2026. Thinc Design is anticipated to construct and complete this project between the months of September and October 2026.
