Oak Street Park Playground Enhancement
The Oak Street Park Playground Enhancement project is an exciting development aimed at enriching the play experience for families in the Oak Street Co-op and Regent Park neighborhoods. City staff have initiated this project as part of their ongoing program to improve playgrounds and play spaces across the city. The objective is simple: to ensure that everyone can enjoy the benefits of play for years to come.
The redesign of the playground will take into account valuable community feedback. This means that local voices will shape the final outcome, ensuring that the equipment meets the needs of children aged five to twelve. Some key features of the proposed playground include:
- New playground equipment designed for various age groups
- Additional seating areas for parents and caregivers to relax while supervising their children
- Engineered wood fiber surfacing for safety and comfort
- An accessible ramp and pathway leading to the playground area, ensuring that everyone can participate in the fun
- New pathways into park and bike parking rings
This project has been classified as an engagement project based on the International Association of Public Participation’s Public Participation Spectrum. This classification emphasizes the importance of involving the community in the planning and execution of public projects, ensuring that their needs and desires are at the forefront.
- The Oak Street Park Playground Enhancement project represents a collaborative effort to build a vibrant, joyful space for children and families. With community input guiding the design, this playground aims to be a cherished place for fun and connection in the years to come.
Here's what to expect:
- Late 2024: We start by asking you for your ideas and vision through an online survey.
- Early to Spring 2026: Tendering and Awarding construction contracts.
- Summer 2026: Construction begins in the spring, and the playground will be closed during this time.
- Late 2026: We aim to finish the playground and have it ready for you to enjoy by the summer!

The current project budget stands at $200,000, funded through the Parks and Recreation department. The preliminary design will help determine if additional funding will be necessary based on the survey results. This careful financial planning ensures that the project remains on track and meets community expectations.
Public Participation
Community engagement is a vital part of this project. The first exercise, a visioning online survey, is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024. This initiative will allow residents to share their ideas and preferences, helping to create a playground that reflects the community's desires.
Construction is expected to start in early spring 2026, with the playground closing for the duration of the work. The anticipated completion date is in the third quarter of 2026, when the new playground will reopen to the public, ready to welcome families for countless hours of play.
