Renaming Anniversary Park

The origins of "Cabbagetown" trace back to the late 1840s, when Irish and other European immigrants escaped the famine in their homeland and relocated to Toronto in search of improved opportunities.

These early settlers, facing significant poverty, grew cabbages and other vegetables in their front yards to sustain themselves.

However, this practice was viewed with a derogatory lens by the wealthier British residents and businesses in the area.

Our community is built by Cabbagetown Residents. It's time to rename Anniversary Park to The Cabbage Patch!

Patches of cabbages and industrious community spirit are what drove Cabbagetown to continuous success centuries later.

After multiple consultations and conversations with residents, we propose to name the parkette "The Cabbage Patch" to reflect the size and the common location of the park.

This adorable and sentimental name hopefully reflects the positive and happy spirit of the neighbourhood.

Tell us what you think about the proposed park name!

Staff Review

July 12, 2024 - September 1, 2024

The Request to Review process involves three stages:

The first stage involves a careful review of the existing name against the criteria from the Property Naming Policy section 6.1.

The second stage requires the new name to pass through the Commemorative Framework.

The third stage requires a report to City Council explaining the justifications for renaming and the proposed new name for approval.

In order to advance the Request to Review, the Property Naming Policy section 6.2 outlines the components that must be included in the application.
