St. Joseph Street Curbside Bump-out Installation
About the Project
St. Joseph Street is set to undergo a significant transformation that aims to improve both safety and aesthetics in the Bay Cloverhill Neighbourhood.
In 2023, through Participatory Budgeting, the community voted to provide $150,000 in s37 community benefits for enhancements to the Barbara Hall Park OLA.
The project will replace temporary streetscape elements like planters and concrete curbs with permanent raised curb bump-outs. These bump-outs will serve a dual purpose: enhancing pedestrian safety and contributing to the environmental landscape as bioswales. This improvement is important because St. Joseph is a one-way street that has experienced issues with vehicles driving the wrong way. By implementing these changes, we not only promote safety but also align with the City’s Vision Zero goals, which aim to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
The community's response to the previous temporary planters has been overwhelmingly positive. They acted as a pilot project, effectively deterring speeding drivers while adding beauty to the street. Given the success of this initiative and the strong support demonstrated in the community vote, the transition to permanent solutions is an exciting next step.
This project is expected to begin in Summer 2025, with completion expected by the end of Fall 2025.
