Laneway Naming: Henry Box Brown Lane
An application was submitted earlier in 2023 by a resident to name the street located in the rear of #8-44 Bright Street.
The laneway has a proposal submitted to name this public street to Henry Box Brown Lane. Currently, the public street / laneway behind #42 Bright Street, that travels north and south and abuts the rear of #42 Bright Street (where Mr. Brown lived)—is not named.
Mr. Brown is a notable figure that is connected with the Underground Railroad movement. He lived and is buried in Toronto. Most importantly, the rowhouse in which he lived on Bright Street still stands. Commemorating Henry ‘Box’ Brown will preserve and add to the knowledge base of Black History in Toronto.
