Sumach Street - Missing Sidewalks Program
The upcoming sidewalk installation project on the east side of Sumach Street aims to enhance accessibility and safety for all residents and visitors.
This initiative, requested by my office in 2023, focuses on creating a new 160m permeable surface sidewalk that runs North-South along Sumach Street between Amelia Street to Winchester Street. The area is currently an unpaved and dirt footpath (desire path) adjacent to the Toronto Necropolis cemetery.
This footpath poses significant challenges for accessibility and pedestrian travel, especially in rainy snowy, and icy conditions. It often becomes submerged in puddles and mud, making it difficult for those using mobility devices or wheelchairs to navigate. The installation of a proper sidewalk will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the area but also ensure that everyone can enjoy safe and reliable mobility.
This project is funded with the Transportation Services Capital Budget.
Anticipated to begin in the Fall of 2025, the project is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
