Power Street Traffic Improvements

As part of Vision Zero, priorities are to protect and enhance the safety of vulnerable road users, especially school children and those with accessible needs.

Due to the complexity of the construction, the installation of traffic control signals at the intersection of Richmond Street/ Power Street and Adelaide Street/ Power Street will likely go into 2025.

Further assessment of the two intersections of Power Street is not required as traffic control signals have already been approved and are in the queue for installation.

On the topic of process to review new traffic control signals, as well as pedestrian crossovers (PXO's) and all-way stop controls, they were reviewed and reported on to Council in 2019 as per Item IE6.8, Attachment 17.

The concern for safety is our office's priority when it comes to traffic and transportation. Parking regulation on the west side of Power Street will be changed to No Parking – Motorists are only permitted to load or unload passengers or merchandise.

As part of the new signal installation at the intersections of Power Street and Richmond Street East and Power Street and Adelaide Street East, we plan to construct several safety improvements.

These will include:

  • Protected safety features for cyclists with curb extensions, curb radius reductions, high visibility marked crossings and accessibility upgrades at both intersections.
  • Extended cycle track along the north side of Adelaide Street East from Parliament Street to Power Street
  • Extended cycle track along the north side of Richmond Street East from Parliament Street to Power Street
  • Narrowed road widths and/or lane widths along Adelaide Street East and Richmond Street East from Parliament Street to east of Power Street that will encourage vehicles to travel at appropriate speeds along the corridor.
  • Northbound one-way cycle track and southbound shared bike lane on Power Street between Adelaide Street East and Richmond Street East.
